We decided to venture off to Litchfield National Park for a “look-see” while we were in Darwin; just a short trip of 308km! (roadmap). Headed down to Batchelor (entrance to the NP) and then a clockwise trip back to Darwin.
What a spectacular place and we just got to experience a tiny little piece of it. This is somewhere we will definitely be coming back to in the future and spending a lot of time exploring. Check Tripadvisor.
We began with the Magnetic termite mounds which are built in such a way that they capture the right amount of the sun to keep the mound an appropriate temperature for the colony to survive. Another type of termite mound (most prevalent in the outback) are the Cathedral termite mounds. These are just monolithic with multiple wings to help with the temperature moderation. Check Tripadvisor.
Then off to Florence Falls which were pretty good. There is a walk down to the base where you can swim. Check Tripadvisor.
We then went off-road for a 4wd trek to the Lost City Rock Formations. It was a great 4×4 track to get there and a fun drive! The formations are huge and give you some perspective to how large the rock formations were millions of years ago. Check Tripadvisor.
Feeling a bit hot and sweaty it was then time to cool off in the Wangi Falls. Nice swim but pretty popular swim hole. Check Tripadvisor.
The final drive was over 80kms of red dirt. The car was totally “redded up” by the time we returned to Hidden Valley CP in Darwin.
